If you’ve been in the drop shipping world, or you’ve been looking to get started with your drop shipping business, you may have heard of a new term that has been getting a lot of attention lately.
That term is…
…Drop Surfing.
So, What The Heck Is This Exactly?
Imagine you have a dropshipping store selling shirts. When a customer places an order for a shirt or shirts in your store, you then go check for that shirt from the suppliers of those shirts on websites like AliExpress, eBay or even Amazon to see who has the best price.
Once you find the supplier with the lowest price on that shirt, then you place your drop ship shirt orders with that vendor, allowing you to make the maximum money on that sale.
The more orders you can do that for, the more money you make, because of the increased margins on each of those sales.
So, you might find an online supplier with an identical shirt that sells for $2 cheaper than everyone else. If you sell 500 of those shirts in one month, you’d end up making $1,000 more that month. Those kind of profits adds up fast.
A Second Definition
There is actually another definition of drop surfing, and while it’s pretty close to the one above, there is a small difference.
This second version for dropsurfing says that it is you “surfing the wave” of online products that are trending, in order to profit from them.
The major drawback to this version is that you have to be able to spot trends early, you may need to operate multiple stores all the time because there may never be a trend that grows around your niche store, and you have to be able to find new trends all the time, because the trend can end at any time.
So, one version is riding the “cheapest price wave”…
…and the other version is riding the “hottest trend wave”.
Drop Surfing Versus Dropshipping – What’s The Difference?
First, we’ll focus from here on out on using the definition of rising the cheapest price wave definition of drop surfing.
If you’ve got your online dropshipping business set up to have only one supplier that you use to fulfill your customer orders, and you are not looking at other suppliers to see if they have better pricing, then you are NOT considered to be doing “surfing”.
However, if you decided to stop using one single vendor, and had multiple vendors to choose from…
…and you always chose the vendor with the lowest pricing, then you would be doing drop surfing.
Another way to define it is:
Drop Shipping + Checking Multiple Vendors For The Lowest Price To Fulfill The Product Purchase = Drop Surfing.
Is This A Better Way To Sell Than Drop Shipping?
The idea behind this is a smart one because you would be maximizing your profits.
Why lock yourself into using one vendor only if you can find better pricing, and ultimately more profits with being open to using other vendors.
Hey, there’s nothing wrong with setting yourself up to maximize your profit margin – that is why you’re in business after all, isn’t it?
With that said, there is a potential drawback.
Can It Actually Cost You Business?
If you’re able to make more money per sales by constantly changing your product supplier and securing the best pricing, then how could that cost you business?
Well, the biggest way it can cost you business is if you are constantly having to stay on top of supplier pricing and price changes personally to make sure you are always getting the best deal.
If you are doing this manually, then you are losing business and / or money through the more hidden side of opportunity costs.
Anything you have to do manually, especially on a product-purchase by product-purchase basis is truly the worst use of your time and a way to create another job for yourself.
Not only are you wasting time doing things manually, you are actually losing money based on the lost time that could have been better spent on growing and scaling your drop ship business.
If you just sell a few products a day, then it might not be that big of a deal yet. But if your goal is to sell dozens, hundreds and even thousands of products online each day, then you will have created a massive headache for yourself, even if you are earning a little more profit on each sale.
However, the truth of the matter is that you will never actually get to the point of selling that many products if you waste your time doing all these things manually. Even if you hire someone else to do this manually for you, now you’re just wasting money having to pay them to do this for you.
What Sites Let You Drop Surf?
It actually doesn’t matter what sites you use to find the cheapest prices, and it doesn’t matter if you source from China, the United States or any other regions.
